Belly in Bliss (from Tumblr-4)

Last one from Tumblr. Pretty loaded, however not with my own stuff… Hope you enjoy nonetheless!

This morning has been a cooking marathon. Lets see… I woke up and had toast with bleu cheese, sliced pear and avocado—DELICIOUS. Such a wonderful combination I found here. Then, I began baking and only stopped for this (and then college essays…)

First up, was red velvet cookieupcakes with cream cheese frosting fromhere—I am also about to order this cookbook because she seems just really cool and is praised on all the food blogs I follow (which is saying something because my bookmarks bar doesn’t even hold them all). She is also a fellow young person with a love for cooking and I am incredibly impressed that she already has a book out and am super excited to get it and start cooking her recipes! So, those were for a friend’s birthday (actually 2—they are twins!) and they turned out quite well 🙂

PIZZA PIZZA

DSC_0103

Today was quite something! The beautiful, crispy autumn that I love finally seemed to arrive in earnest, and with it a run and the first of, hopefully many, hikes through the Outing Club I have started just this year at my school! Only two kids signed up, but it was the perfect size group for a hike—not too big, nor too small—and we all enjoyed the day, which  was the point, so it was perfect!

The ending was pretty great too—a pizza inspired loosely by this that turned out splendidly! I have found that my taste buds get bored very easily, therefore this pizza has a very different ‘crust’ than center, so I got almost two different pizzas in one!

Lonely Sunday Nights = Prime-Time Cupcake Time

I don’t know about you, but this is what my Sunday nights look like. (Hopefully) no more homework weighs over me and my creativity is able to thrive with the help of comfy clothing, and a great Pandora station.

This past Sunday I was alone, so naturally, I baked some cupcakes. I recently have found this wonderful blog that I love. She has a recipe for chocolate cupcakes on there from yet another source (found here). So, I made half what that recipe called for, because in my family, we don’t eat normal desserts very often, so this is actually a rarely, mainstream dessert recipe for me. 12 normal and delicious cupcakes were in order, however because my cousin was in need of a little cheering after struggling through the beginning of her senior year with a relentless soar throat and general sickness. A family friend was also in need of a thank you, so 6 for each seemed perfect.

The company of two large bowls, the smell of chocolate, and the inspiration the sight of mint extract provided me when I spotted it in the pantry kept me quite busy and contented that night. There is nothing quite like putting energy, time, and care into something made with your hands, knowing it/they are going to someone you care for. Anyways, these are so yummy and my own frosting delightfully inspired me with its liquid-ey outcome. Read on and enjoy!

I realized today that I haven’t yet put my original Tumblr posts on here. I started out on Tumblr and have upgraded since then, but I thought it would be fun to share those here, so here they are!

This was my first post:

Hello Dear Foodie!

I am so glad to have your company! I am a seventeen-year-old who LOVES cooking and loves sharing my loves. Hence… FOOD BLOG for the world to see! (or, maybe, just you, in which case you are wonderful) So, my thought is that this will be a place where I can post my favorite recipes, with my tips, along with my own recipes. I am also really interested in food in a broader sense, so I will probably post information about buying local, what that means and why it is worth knowing something about, as well as sustainable farming and maybe even some nutrition tips! {I promise I won’t write anything I don’t think is interesting or informative} And, who knows? Someday I may get tired of writing about food and write about something else!

But, for now I am ecstatic to share my love of food with you and I hope you enjoy.

Why are moths attracted to light?

IMG_1433

The sources I found agreed that moths normally use the moon as a means of orientation and navigation. With their flight pattern, it makes things easier if they have some way of knowing which way is up and the moon provides that for them. Our artificial lights now seem to provide that as well. For navigation, moths use the moon as we used to (and sometimes still) use the North Star. As they fly at night, they head straight in their desired direction with the moon directly overhead. After each hour, they adjust their line of flight about 16 degrees to account for the movement of the moon around the Earth’s surface. (so impressive!)

With snow on the forecast for later this week and chilly temperatures descending already, warmth has been on my mind. This morning, after a leisurely start to the day, I sketched the idea pictured above and soon after found myself knee-deep in the smells of butternut and warm, starchy rice. (I would have loved to use wild rice for this, however I couldn’t find ours until just after I poured the white rice into the boiling water… of course)

These bowls offer wonderful ways to combine all sorts of flavors in one dish (which you know I love) and they provide elements of the major food groups: protein (hard-boiled egg), vegetables (butternut squash + onion + carrots + spinach), grain (rice) and fats (nuts).
